The Story Behind The Guardian Vial

In Appalachian folklore, rosemary has long been associated with protection. It was planted near gates, tucked above doorways, and carried while traveling to help ward off unwanted visitors, negative energy, and restless spirits known as “haints.” Lavender carried a gentler kind of protection, tied to peace, sleep, dreams, and spiritual calm.

Together, rosemary and lavender were believed to create a balance of strength and softness — protection without fear, boundaries without bitterness.

Then there is the mirrored glass.

In Southern and Appalachian folk traditions, mirrors have often been viewed as powerful spiritual objects. Broken or mirrored glass was sometimes associated with reflection, reversal, and deflection — the idea that harmful intent, jealousy, or negativity sent toward you could be reflected away rather than absorbed.

That is what makes this combination feel so meaningful to me: rosemary for protection, lavender for peace, and mirrored glass as a reminder that what we send into the world has a way of returning to us.

What makes The Guardian Vial even more special is that I did not know any of this when I created it. I simply moved through my day choosing what I felt led to use. Only afterward did I begin researching the folklore behind the ingredients — and discovered how beautifully they already belonged together.

I wanted these herbs and mirrored glass enclosed safely inside a small bottle, creating something beautiful to carry close.
